System lineage

HarmonyOS and EMUI are related, but not a simple rename

Huawei introduced HarmonyOS 1.0 for smart-screen deployment before the large phone migration. HarmonyOS 2 then expanded to smartphones and explicitly compared its experience with the previous EMUI generation. Huawei also maintains a separate global EMUI product page, so the transition should not be reduced to a universal one-step rename.

HarmonyOS 1

Distributed OS foundation

Aug 9, 2019

Huawei introduced HarmonyOS as a distributed operating system and identified smart screens as its first deployment category.

New in this version

Platform origin

The first official deployment path covered smart screens before later expansion to other device categories; this is not evidence that HarmonyOS 1 began as a phone-wide EMUI replacement. [1]

AI milestone not confirmed

The selected official sources do not confirm a version-level AI change for this release.

Starting point

This is the starting point of this formal sequence; no earlier release in this history is compared.

How to read this history

  • Most version-specific evidence in this history comes from Huawei's China-region pages.
  • Feature access can vary by region, device, software version, account, language, and later software updates.
  • Huawei's descriptions confirm vendor claims and release positioning; they are not independent product tests or proof of worldwide availability.
  • An AI change appears only when the selected official source states a version-specific capability. General descriptions such as smart experience or cross-device collaboration are not treated as AI evidence.
